Message This is a follow up to my post this morning La-Z-Link

I test-fit the dipstick from my 87 accord tonight, which is of a thin blade type design, and it did indeed go through the dipstick tube as far as I could get it (it was a little tight, but it did go in). Of course, as fate would have it, it was about 6" too short, and the rubber stopper is about 1/8" smaller in diameter than the Z dipstick, so it doesn't seal up the tube. Thus inspired, I made a trek to the trusty local Autozone to see what they might have as far as dipsticks go. The selection was slim, but I selected contestant #3, which was designed to fit a Big block Chevrolet. The dipstick itself was about 1/4" shorter than the Zs, but was the closest I could find. Unfortunately, being a high quality Spectre dress-up item [/sarcasm], the blade wasn't flexible enough to follow the tight bends in the dipstick tube. At this point, every other auto parts store was closed, so I cruised through Home Depot in hopes of finding something that I could possibly make a new dipstick out of. I left empty handed. however, I am hopeful that an OEM Chevy big block dipstick might fit the bill, so when my dad's Suburban gets out of the shop tomorrow, I will try to borrow his dipstick to see if it is more flexible than the one I tried from Autozone. Everyone please keep your fingers crossed ;-). The only other options I have come up with at this point are 1) cut and splice (weld, most likely) the flexible end off my accord (or another used dipstick from a junkyard), or 2) (my Uncle's suggestion - he used to race hemi-powered speedboats in the 60s & early 70s) find a long Teflon (because of it's heat resistance) ziptie to use for the blade section of the dipstick. I will be scouring the web for such a ziptie once I post this, as I have never seen such a beast, but he says they are used to band together loads of metal rod and such. If anyone else has any ideas, please feel free to reply here or email me your suggestions.

Thanks,

Rich
